In The City

Lucian (and his bike) arrived safely in San Francisco. Claire and I got him to the airport bright and early Friday, a little after 5am. I can't believe it is finally here!

Lucian was lucky enough to stay with his buddy (and fellow rider) Chris at his sister's place in the financial district. I believe it was the residences in the Ritz Carlton on Market St. Not a bad view from the 21st floor.

There was a little time for site seeing Friday and Saturday. Here's a few text pics Lucian sent to me.

They walked into MOMA about a minute before it closed

Saturday was registration for the ride. They fit 3 people, 2 bike boxes, and 2 bikes into one car to get there. It doesn't look comfortable, but I applaud their efficiency.

The registration lines were quite long. Understandable given the volume of riders, I think about 2,500. It took Lucian 4 hours to get through the process, although about an hour of that was a team photo session for the Red Pencils where Lucian met the other fourteen riders that are on the team.

All the bikes being checked in. Chris is pointing to his. Lucian's is the white bike directly to the left.

The ride begins today traveling 79.4 miles from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. I'll post as much as I can here, you can also follow the Red Pencils Team blog: http://theredpencils.posterous.com/ They plan to have the riders make posts and they have a support team taking photos and videos.
